Cut the very top of the fender off along the dashed green line. This should still allow me to mount the bracket on the back two fender bolts. Was a bit wary about cutting up the fender as I wanted to keep all the stock parts stock in case I needed to reuse them.

It'll be easier to cut off the main bit while the fender is off. There is no risk of slipping and cutting into the fairing which might happen if the 'chop' is done with the fender still on the bike. But after saying that you still need to do some minor filling/cutting once it's back on to get the two side bits to fit flush with your newly mounted plate. You'll also need some long M6 bolts because the stock ones are just too short to mount the angle bracket as well.

Well I've cut the top of the fender off and reattached it to the bike. I can now put the tool kit and prop stay back under the seat and all the holes are now covered up

Cheap and still gives protection to the rear lights.

Gets rid of the worst bit of the rear guard but leaves a useful number plate mounting point and keeps the rear plate light.

Next are some smaller indicators.
