Before Phat's detailed 'how to...' this may help:

There's a couple more schematics that might help, at the bottom of

By Phat PTA Sept2005
I have been interested in changing the foot peg position on my SVS
and after racking up almost 2000 miles, I felt that sooner than
later would be a wise decision. Being almost 6’6” tall, unfolding my
legs after a long ride was sometimes a slow, sometimes painful
procedure.
After careful consideration and research through the SV1000 Forum, I
decided upon the footrest brackets from the 2003 SV650N for my
conversion parts. A bit more expensive than the Buell Firebolt peg
conversion but I opted to stay with the Suzuki parts. Approximately
3 months ago, I purchased the necessary parts to convert the foot
peg brackets for my SV1000S to a more comfortable and tolerable
position for longer distance touring. I had asked some questions in
the forums and received well though out answers from a few members.
Many props to Tundra Tom for giving me the necessary the necessary
information to get the parts and head in the right direction.
I will try my best to provide a simple but clear overview of the
conversion I performed on my SV1000.
I ordered the parts from Oneida Suzuki, all totalling around $100 if
I remember correctly. Here is what I ordered, all parts for the 2003
SV650N:
– Right Foot peg Bracket
– Left Foot peg Bracket
- Shifter Rod
– Brake Pedal Return Spring
– Brake Light Actuator Spring

Start by removing the black stabilization bracket attached to the
frame (if you haven't ditched it already!) and the foot peg bracket
heel guard. Loosen and remove the rear brake hydraulic actuator from
the Right Foot peg.

Remove the Right Foot peg Bracket by loosening the two Allen bolts
making sure to carefully remove the right pedal brake light actuator
foot spring and the brake pedal return spring.
Using either a vice or an adjustable wrench to hold the removed foot
rest assembly (cover the peg / bracket with a towel to prevent
damage) and remove the Allen bolt on the inside of the bracket that
secures the footpeg. This is a loctite set bolt, so you might have
to work at it a bit. Once it is removed, separate the peg from the
old bracket. If you look at the old bracket next to the new bracket,
the new bracket will bring the foot position 1.5 inched down and 1.5
inches to the front. This should effectively relieve some lower
backpressure and help to decrease the knee bend experienced with the
original footpeg position.

Remove the brake pedal and clean up the peg. Regrease the foot rest
and inside of the brake pedal pivots before reassembling the brake
pedal / foot peg. Fit the peg/pedal combo onto the new bracket and
retighten the Allen bolt. (Make sure you put loctite on the threads
for the foot peg, or you might end up an unhappy camper while down
riding the road!)
Reattach the rear brake hydraulic actuator to the new bracket. The
original brake light actuator spring is approximately ½" too short,
so you will have to very carefully stretch the old spring out until
it is the correct length to properly activate the rear brake light.
In my opinion this was the biggest pain in the ass because you have
to stretch and trial the length of the spring to make sure it works
correctly.
While trialling the fit of the brake light actuator spring, attach
the new brake pedal return spring ready for when you get it right!
The new bracket will cause the rear brake hydraulic line to be
tighter, taking up the extra slack that was once there. I have had
no problems regarding the increase tension on the rear brake
performance. (Edit=AndyW: worth checking tension on the brake line
through max/min swingarm travel!) There is no loss in clearance
between the rear brake pedal hydraulic actuator and the swing arm.

Remove the left Foot peg Bracket by loosening the two Allen bolts,
making sure to carefully remove the left shifter rod.
Using either a vice or an adjustable wrench to hold the foot peg
assembly (after covering with a towel again to protect it), remove
the Allen bolt on the inside of the bracket. As I said earlier this
is loctite set bolt, so you might have to work at it a bit.
Once it is removed, separate the peg from the old bracket.
Remove the shifter pedal and clean up the peg.
Regrease the peg and inside of the shifter pedal pivots and put the
shifter pedal back in place on the foot peg.
Fit the peg/pedal combo onto the new bracket and retighten the Allen
bolt. (Make sure you put loctite on the threads for the foot peg!).
Reattach the shifter rod to the new bracket and the gear box
transmission splined shaft. Adjust the height of the shifter to your
own personal preferences.
I have ridden my SV for over 2000 miles since this modification with
much better tolerance to long rides. I would recommend it to anyone
that is looking for a change in position for his or her legs or a
different pressure on their lower back.
Hope this answers anyone's questions regarding this mod.
Comments:
Oomidamon -
Excellent write-up Phat! Being a bit of a lanky git myself I'm
interested in this - I've already fitted the Buell pegs to mine.
Have you done any mods to your seat? I had mine repadded and had an
extra inch of padding fitted to give more legroom, which makes a big
difference too.
Thanks, Oomidamon. The only seat modification I did was to replace
the stocker with the Suzuki OEM gel seat. Taller than the Corbin or
Sargent in my opinion. I did modify the gel seat up front to remove
the rucking usually associated with the Suzuki gel seat replacement.
Once my bank account fills up again, a set of Heli-bars are in order
to complete my cockpit mods.
