Bayouboy 01/04/2004:  The 17/42 520 chain kit from AFAM arrived today. The rear sprocket is really light, didn't weigh it but it feels like just a few ounces. The CS sprocket is steel and the rear is hard anodized aluminum, both were made in France. The gold & black x-ring chain is from Japan but I can't tell who makes it, AFAM is the only name stamped on it.

TLRMan: I run the 520 AFAM kit on my TLR....Gone better than 16k miles without a hitch. You save about 3-4 lbs too.

Drmudd:  The 17/42 AFAM kit came with a 110 link chain which fit just fine on SV with the chain adjusters almost all the way out. Galfer SS brake line at its limit. I ended up shortening the chain by one link which puts the adjusters almost all the way in. Now there is room to adjust the chain and the brake line doesn't look so tight. I now have a Goodridge line for a sv650(03) which is 3/4" longer; to accommodate the 03 GSXR rear sets or the 03 sv650 peg set up. Both are better than stock in there own ways: the gsxr set up feels more aggressive and the sv650 set up is more neutral more room more comfortable. The rear sets I'm using both require the longer brake line and the 110 link chain stretched it to its limit so I went to 109 links.

CARE:

Bayouboy 02/04/2004:  I counted the links in my chain and it also has 110 links counting the master link. Are you sure you only removed one link? It seems to me that you have to remove them in pairs (one gold & one black on mine, see pic) in order to fit the master link.

Drmudd:  OK 2 links. One pitch?

Bayouboy 03/04/2004:  I was looking at my bike today thinking about this post of yours. With the rear wheel all the way forward is clearance with the hugger an issue? Did you by any chance measure the clearance? I know we have different huggers but if you did measure the clearance I'd be interested to know the result. Have to keep in mind also that the tire shape changes somewhat during hard acceleration and braking.

My hugger extends down in between the tire and the swingarm. I'm not sure but I don't think the Suzuki hugger does this. So I might have a lot less room for moving the rear wheel forward than you did. After looking at this pic do you still think I'll be ok with the 108 link chain?

Drmudd:  Probably not, the Suzuki hugger sits on top of the swing arm, flush with the rear face on the cross brace. I have 23-24 mm clearance between the front of the tire and the swing arm.
