By Bjam 07/2003:  Couldn't resist a poke around inside my 'combination meter' (not my description but the one Suzuki use ).  So, to get to the combination meter you first need to follow the fairing removal instructions here.

OK, so now you should see the following: two mounting bolts, see yellow circles, and a lug, see red. Undo the two mounting bolts.

Now make 100% sure your ignition is turned off and will stay that way otherwise electronic parts may get damaged!! (Edit=AndyW: not a bad idea to disconnect the battery when you play with your bikes electrics)

OK, is it turned off? Good. Unplug the combination meter and gently tug the entire unit until it comes off the bottom lug and into your hands.

And now your bike should look like this. Mmmm, bare bones.

Should I stop there? The manual says do not attempt to disassemble the combination meter unit. Ooops, guess that fell on deaf ears.

So here is the back of the meter with the five screws that hold everything in place.

So, so very tempting. Shall I, shall I not...........Oh OK then, here we go for the deep dive into the combinating meter.

So five screws removed, lifted the lid and....this is the first thing you see.

Wow, that looks really complicated but I can't stop there. So lets lift out the guts.

Now we are in business, this is the front of the meter seen from behind (you know what I mean&#33 and it reveals why we have little dimples in our displays at the 3.5 and 9.5 thousand rpm points - its where the screws fit into the front piece to hold it together.

I know, I know, you want the naked full frontal.............

Well here it is in its entirety - no blushing please

And for a real treat lets have some close-up action....

And finally an even closer look at the diodes that are surface mounted and presumably easily changed for the blue variety.  You will be glad to hear that it all went back together and is still working.

jrl305:  Great shots but why did you stop there? I took mine down that far and saw the same thing. There's probably a few more to light the tach. From the looks of it, when I opened mine, there was two boards sandwiched together. You may have to part those boards to get to the back side of the diodes to change them out. There's a large, multi pin connector that needs to be unsoldered to separate the boards then you will have full access to the back of the diodes. If I can find that link with the instructions, I'll post it here.

HiOctane:  It looks as if there are only 6 LED's to replace to change the color near the LCD screen, but did you notice how many bulbs or LED's are up by the Tach area? Just wondering if they are all surface mount LED's like you've shown. It looks like the combo unit comes apart real easy, that's cool! Now to hunt down some colored LED's to replace those crappy orange colored ones.

Bjam:  I took the thing apart as far as I dare and safe in the knowledge that it wouldn't be broken. If you look at the full frontal you can see two screws beside the rev counter needle. These screws pass all the way through the unit and I guess will help take it further apart. The reason I stopped was I tugged on the rev counter needle and couldn't pull it off (at least not without significant force).

I was not in the mood to get the soldering iron out as my soldering skills are a little rusty but I did see the forbidding multi-pin connector and hoped that it was a push fit rather than soldered. If you can find the further instructions I may just go for it

jrl305:  Here's the instructions that I remembered seeing. It's for the GSXR instrument panel but you'll get the idea.

Bjam:  Thanks for the link John. I am sorely tempted to order up those Blue LED's, a new fine soldering iron and give it a go
