By AndyW 04/2004 Here's a couple of the suckers that I actually managed to remove
intact - now stuck to my garage wall for reasons unknown!
The
others either delaminated (the clear plastic coat lifted off
leaving the underside of the sticker well and truly in place) or
kept tearing so that I had to remove them tiny bit by tiny bit
(the stickers on the tank and swingarm are the worst offenders
for this!). |
Removal: the theory is easy, just apply heat for
a few minutes with a hair dryer or rag soaked in boiling water and
then lift an edge of the sticker with a finger-nail and peel off
(this is what all the bike mags tell you!).
In practice you might get a couple off pretty easily (those stuck to
plastics) but the others will be a bitch, so the main requirements
for the job are patience and time! (use sharp objects like razor
blades at your own peril...one slip and a paint repair
job could be looming!). The stickers are made up
of two layers - one a protective plastic film and then the sticky,
soft, "I don't want to peel of in one go" layer. Application of heat
will tend to make the plastic 'upper' layer easy to peel off and
then use of a 'solvent' (with care) will further soften what's left - just keep
gently scraping away with your fingernail or soft plastic scraper
until all the bits have gone. Clean up any sticky residue remaining
and any traces of solvent with a wax polish.
(Care: 'Solvents': various members used different solvents with varying
degrees of success - the least likely to harm paint or plastics over
a short period of time are:
WD40, white spirit, paraffin (kerosene), petrol, 'GooGone' - I would
limit the amount of solvent used and the time paint/plastics are
exposed as much as possible and if you can get away with using noe
all the better. I used paraffin successfully)

I've had the bad experiences with acetone, gasoline, carb cleaner,
etc. Now, I just take my time, heat them a bit, peel them off slowly
but surely and use WD 40 or GooGone to remove the adhesive

DON'T do what I did. I got the tank sticker off just fine with
acetone, knowing that clear coated paints will not react with it.
Well I move on to the ones on the frame and before I realized it was
smearing the paint all around. Going to try to match the paint and
reshoot that area, if unsuccessful will put my Arai stickers there
to cover my mistake. You are now forwarned, DONT USE ACETONE!!!
