Stock Can Mod:
Below is a cheap and easy way to improve the sound from your stock
exhaust.
Here’s a list of tools you will need.
1. Drill (cordless will do)
2. Drill bits: 1/8, 3/8, 1/2. (You can use larger for deeper sound)
3. 4mm hex key
4. Dremmel tool with cut off wheels
5. Low strength thread lock
6. WD40
First step is to remove the chrome end caps from the end of the
cans. Use the Dremmel tool with cut off wheel to cut the welds
holding the hex screws in place. Take your time and use a steady
hand to avoid marking up the caps. Cut most of the way through the
welds than use the hex key to break it loose the rest of the way.

Next step is to drill holes in the stock baffle. Use the 1/8 drill
bit to drill pilot holes. This will serve 3 purposes. It will allow
you to be more precise (not that that makes all that much
difference), speed up the time it takes to drill, and keeps you from
dulling the larger bits. Drill slowly with medium pressure. You may
want to use WD40 or some other lube to keep the bit from getting too
hot and allow some time for the bit to cool after a few holes.

After drilling the pilot holes use the larger bits to finish the
holes. The more holes you drill the louder the cans will be. Larger
holes will also give you a deeper sound. I started with 9 3/8” and
later increased to 18 (per can) as I didn’t find it loud enough.
Once you finish drilling the holes you may want to put the covers
back on and start the bike to see if you are happy with the amount
of sound, if you want it louder drill more holes.

Once you are pleased with the amount of sound, it’s time to replace
the end caps. Use a small amount of liquid thread lock to keep the
screws from coming loose. Once the caps are back in place and the
thread lock is dry take her out for a spin.
modified_stock_cans.mp3 There are some
alternate methods. Some have used a cutting torch to cut completely
around the peashooter in the place of drilling. You can also use a
bar after cutting completely around to wiggle the peashooter until
it breaks loose allowing you to completely remove the internal
baffle. One thing to consider when “gutting” the cans is that in
some states/countries you will fail inspection without the internal
baffle. If you drill and fail because the bike is too loud, you can
get some sheet metal screws and plug the holes or use a thin piece
of sheet metal to make a plate to cover the holes, get the bike
inspected and just remove the screws/plate.
