I am starting the process of building an SV1000 as a race bike and I
have been looking at some of the SV650 boards but there isn't a lot
of 1000 info out there so this place will really help.
I have raced numerous bikes over the years (ZX-6R, F2, EX500 -
current race bike) and I had the opportunity to race both an '02 and
an '03 SV650 this summer as part on an endurance effort. The 650 is
a really fun bike that is very popular here so I started to look for
one to put together for a Suzuki Cup ride for next year. During my
search I came across a SV1000 on Ebay which I went for. I got a good
deal on it (it needs some upper fork tubes but is otherwise all
there) and I will pick it up next week.
It's not what I started out looking for but I figured WTF, I always
wanted to race a big bore bike and the classes the 1000 can run in
are a bit smaller as well.
Now I am starting the process of figuring out all that needs to be
done to get the bike ready for the track. So far I am planning on:
full race pipe, Penske or Ohlins shock, reworked forks, 520 chain
conversion, Power commander, clipons, GSXR bodywork, TRE mod, brake
lines and race pads and rear sets. The Suzuki cup class runs under
Superstock rules so there is not too much engine work that can be
done and I will start out with the motor being stock for a while.
There are a couple of areas where I could use some help from the
SV1K world out there.
Pipe: There are not a lot of full race pipes available. Lots of
slip-on systems are around but weight reduction and ground clearance
calls for a full system. I would like to get a 2 into 1 but most of
the pipes appear to be 2 into 2. I want aluminium cans for
reparability and cost. So far it looks like Yoshimura but any advice
would be appreciated.
Spare parts; A set of spare wheels will be needed for rain tires and
ease of tire changes. Since there are not a lot of spares available
I am trying to figure out what other Suzuki parts are
interchangeable. I heard GSXR fronts are interchangeable although
the part number appears to be a little different. If a change can be
made by use of different bearings or spacers that would be fine.
Color is not important. Aftermarket wheels are not an option due
both to cost and Superstock rules.
Any info on interchange ability of other Suzuki wheels as well as
other parts such as controls would be very helpful.
Any other tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated. The winter is
going to be fun getting it all together, the spring will be even
better.

The standard rear shock from an 01 gsxr750 slots in and sweetens the
handling, according to others on this site. A later model 750 shock
will go on but there's some clearance issues, as the piggy back is
on the opposite side, from memory it still goes on though. This has
been discussed on a recentish thread. Try doing a search and
selecting 90 days and older. Also highlight Search all fields.
I'm sure the gsxr750 wheels fit the SV as well.
The front brakes are straight off the gsxr750 (01 I think).

Wo, wo, wo, don't go with the yosh 2-1 can. here
check this site out for some credible exhaust info. It helped me a
lot. However, after reading this you will probably be in the same
boat I am. Which is so now what is the best with what's available. On
my website i have started compiling a list of exhausts that are
currently available. The site is not done, but the exhaust pages are
up to the point where research is made easy.

Items
purchased and currently being installed:
Yosh 2 into 1 pipe
USB Power commander
Hot Bodies body work
GP Tech fairing bracket
Steering damper and Goodrich brake lines from Lockhart Phillips
Had the stock front wheel and one fork tube straightened by Frame
Straight in Michigan. The radiator was straightened and repaired by
Myler Radiator Repair.
Numerous spares have been acquired. Note, GSXR front brakes will not
work. Front rotors are 310 mm, GSXR's are 320 mm and do not
interchange. The wheels do. About half of the safety wiring is done. |

Almost ready. The front brake rotors should be back Monday from
getting straightened. The paint job will have to wait until after
the first race weekend.

Bodywork is GSXR1000 Superbike from Hot Bodies. It needed some
creative trimming to clear the front header pipe, where the midpipe
comes through the back, and also the shock linkage. I guess it does
look a little low from the side but seems to be OK from the view
from the seat.
